Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian died in a helicopter crash in Iran’s mountainous northwest, according to Iranian officials on Monday. This sad event has left a big gap in Tehran’s leadership during a time of increased tensions in West Asia.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in helicopter crash
Iranian media reported today that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died after his helicopter crashed in a mountainous region of the country. On Monday, multiple Iranian media outlets declared Raisi dead after the crash, although there has been no official confirmation yet.
“The Mehr news agency said that Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s President, had an accident while working for the people of Iran and sadly passed away,” other news sources also shared similar information.
On Sunday, May 19, 2024, Iranian state television said a helicopter with Raisi had crashed in the Jolfa area of East Azerbaijan province due to bad weather. The crash happened in the mountainous forest of Dizmar near Varzaghan town, as reported by the official IRNA news agency.
Early Monday, May 20, 2024 the head of Iran’s Red Crescent, Pirhossein Koolivand, said that rescue teams had found the helicopter and were heading to the crash site. State TV reported that there were “no signs” of life among the passengers “so far.” Local media shared many pictures that looked like the wreckage of the helicopter.
Before the crash, Raisi and his counterpart from Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, had opened a dam project together on the border. Iran’s Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said the accident happened because the weather made it hard to land safely.
Raisi’s convoy comprised three helicopters, including two that landed safely in the northwestern city of Tabriz. Vahidi said it was tough to talk to the third helicopter, which had President Raisi inside.
Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was also on board, along with the governor of East Azerbaijan and the province’s main imam, according to the IRNA news agency.
