“One Nation One Election” is an important plan to transform the way India conducts elections. It aims to hold elections for both the Lok Sabha and state legislatures at the same time.
This approach tries to ease the challenges caused by too many elections and make voting easier. Right now, India has elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies at different times.
This means elections happen often, causing a lot of work and spending.
What is One Nation One Election
The idea of “One Nation One Election” supports conducting Lok Sabha elections simultaneously with Rajya Sabha elections.
This implies that elections would be held simultaneously for both the national and the state governments. The goal of this idea is to make the election process smoother.
It wants to reduce the problems caused by having elections too often. This way, the government can focus better on its work without constant interruptions.
When will One Nation One Election come into effect?
Right now, in India, we have different elections for the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
It causes a lot of work for the government, costs a lot of money, and slows the tasks. One Nation One Election wants to change this.
It suggests having all the elections together, maybe every five years. This would make things easier for everyone.
Recently, a Kovind-led Panel sent a report to President Murmu, on 14 March 2024, about the One Nation One Election.
One Nation One Election Benefits
Supporters of the One Nation One Election believe that several good things could happen if it becomes a reality:
- Reduced Election Expenditure: If all elections happen at the same time, it would cost less money overall. We wouldn’t need to spend as much on things like organizing the elections, keeping them safe, and advertising for different elections separately.
- Efficient Resource Utilization: When we plan all elections together, we can use government stuff like police and officials in a smarter way. We won’t need to use them many times for different elections, so we can save resources.
- Governance Continuity: Sometimes, when there’s an election, leaders can’t focus on their work because they’re too busy with campaigning. If we have all elections at once, there won’t be as many interruptions, and leaders can focus more on doing their jobs well.
- Enhanced Voter Engagement: If all elections happen together, more people might want to vote. They only have to go out and vote once, so it might be easier for them. This could mean more people having a say in important decisions.

Kovind Panel Recommend ‘One Nation One Election’
In June 2019, a special group led by Bibek Debroy, along with members from different political parties, was formed to explore the easiness of One Nation One Election.
This group, which included a former Defense Secretary, was tasked with examining whether this idea could work.
After a thorough examination, the group presented its findings to the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
They are supporting the concept and proposing a plan for its implementation.
On Thursday, March 14, 2024, a panel led by Former President Kovind submitted a report to President Murmu. It was regarding the One Nation One Election proposal.
The report highlighted that implementing simultaneous elections might require changes to the constitution. It suggested a phased approach to this process.
For example, certain states could start holding their elections at the same time as the national Parliament elections in either 2024 or 2029. Afterward, we could slowly include all the states in this synchronized electoral schedule.
