Same-Sex Marriage in Thailand: Thailand might soon allow same-sex couples to marry. The country’s politicians recently voted in favor of a bill supporting this change. During the final vote, on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the 400 members of the lower house of parliament supported the bill. And only 10 opposed it. The bill must first get approval from Thailand’s Senate and then the king must endorse it before it becomes a law.It’s been in development for more than ten years, and if it’s approved, it might take around 120 days to start working. The new same-sex marriage law would change the marriage law by using words that don’t specify gender.
It will be instead of “men,” “women,” “husbands,” and “wives.” It would also give LGBTQ couples the same rights as heterosexual couples when it comes to inheritance and adoption. In December, the parliament passed the first readings of four different draft bills on same-sex marriage. They assigned a committee to combine them into a single draft.

The Same-sex marriage law would make Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to pass such a law. Danuphorn Punnakanta, spokesperson for the ruling Pheu Thai Party, made the following statement in Parliament.
The amendment overseeing the Marriage Equality Bill, which I chair, is for all Thai citizens, regardless of their gender. It would not take away any rights from heterosexual couples.

Same-sex marriage refers to, when 2 people of the same gender get married. In the United States, it started in 2009 in Vermont. But it was only in 2015 that it became legal everywhere, thanks to a big decision by the Supreme Court.
Now other countries also allow same-sex marriage. Some parts of Europe did it before the United States. Even though same-sex marriage is getting more accepted, some places still don’t like it. This is because of beliefs that say being in the LGBTQ+ community is wrong.
Whereas, many people are working hard to change this. They want everyone to have the same rights, no matter who they love. Same-sex marriage is important as it shows that love is love, no matter what. And it helps LGBTQ+ couples have the same rights as everyone else, like sharing property and making decisions together.
