Pig Kidney Transplant To Human at Massachusetts General Hospital
In an unprecedented medical procedure, doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital transplanted a pig kidney into a 62-year-old patient.
This marks a significant advancement in the field of xenotransplantation.
A historic operation was carried out on Saturday. In this operation, a genetically modified pig kidney was transplanted into a living human for the first time.
The news has been shared by MassGeneral News on Twitter.
Unlike previous efforts in which pig kidneys were temporarily transplanted into brain-dead donors. However, this process directly involved the living recipient.
The recipient of the experimental transplant is Richard “Rick” Slayman of Weymouth, Massachusetts.
Slayman, who had a kidney transplant at the same hospital in 2018, needed to return to dialysis last year due to complications.
As traditional treatment options dwindled, his doctors suggested the pioneering pig kidney transplant.
Pig Kidney Transplant To Human named Richard Slayman
Slayman has been battling type 2 diabetes for several years. Moreover, he has been managing high blood pressure for a long time.
He underwent a kidney transplant in December of the year 2028. The donor was dead.
Kawai underwent a transplant at MGH. Before the transplant, Slayman was on dialysis for seven years.
About five years after the transplant, the donor’s kidneys began to fail. Due to this, Slayman had to start dialysis in May 2023.
Following the transplant, Slayman made the following statement in a press release-“I saw it as a way to help myself. I also saw it as an opportunity to provide hope to the thousands of people in need of a transplant to survive. “
This process represents the latest advancement in the field of genetically engineered pigs.
These pigs may one day provide kidneys, hearts, livers, and other organs to address organ shortages for patients in need of transplants.
Dr. Tatsuo Kawai, the hospital’s director of clinical transplantation tolerance, provided a statement.
As he explained, the transplant procedure is expected to provide a lifeline to millions of people around the world who are suffering from kidney failure.
Who Provided Pig Kidney to Human Richard Slayman
Egenesis of Cambridge, Mass. genetically altered a pig kidney using the CRISPR-Cas9 method.
A pig provided a kidney to Richard Slayman. Harmful genes were removed and human genes were added to the kidney to increase its compatibility with humans.
Scientists inactivate porcine endogenous retrovirus in a pig donor. This was done to eliminate the possibility of infection in humans.
This successful treatment marks a significant moment in xenotransplantation.
In the field of organ or tissue transplantation between species, this achievement is particularly significant due to the global organ shortage.
