Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on July 26 to commemorate India’s historic victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War.
This day is known as Kargil Victory Day also. In this war, the Indian Army successfully drove out Pakistani infiltrators who had illegally taken Tiger Hill and other posts on the Indian side of the Line of Control as part of “Operation Vijay”.
This armed conflict lasted more than 60 days in Kargil in Ladakh. Nearly 500 officials, soldiers, and Jawans of the Indian army were sacrificed during the battle.

The war lasted from May 8 to July 26. Nearly 30,000 troops were deployed to the Kargil area along with special forces to secure Kargil against Pakistan as part of Operation Vijay.
The Indian Air Force successfully destroyed Pakistan’s illegal posts and on July 26 India drove Pakistani troops out of its territory.
Therefore, this day is celebrated in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives in the service of the country during the war.
