Origin and Story Behind Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
According to Vedic Puranas, sage Mrikandu was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Sage Mrikandu was childless. He used to be sad because of childlessness. God had not given him the possibility of having children.
Mrikandu thought that Mahadev could change all the laws of the world. If Mahadev, the God of Gods, is pleased with him, then he will be blessed with a child.
Sage Mrikandu did severe penance to Lord Shiva to get a child. Shivji appeared after being pleased with Mrikandu’s penance and said that there is no happiness of children in your destiny, being pleased with your penance, I give you the boon of having a son. But, this child will be short-lived, his age will be only 12 years.
After a few days, a son was born to the sage. He was named Markandeya. As soon as he was a little older, the parents sent the son to the hermitage of other sages to gain knowledge.
Like this 11 years passed. When the child Markandeya came home, his parents were sad. The parents told about his short life.
Who wrote Mahamrityunjay Mantra/Founder of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra?
Markandeya did not want to see his parents unhappy. He wanted to live for the happiness of his parents. The son Markandeya was very wise. He had acquired all the knowledge of the world in a very short span of time in the ashram.
Markandeya composed the Mahamrityunjaya mantra to worship Lord Shiva for the boon of longevity and started chanting it continuously sitting in the Shiva temple.
When the time was over, the Yamdoots came to take Markandeya’s life, but he was engrossed in the penance of Mahakal. He did not dare to reach the child. When the Yamdoots returned empty-handed, Yamraj himself came to take Markandeya’s life.
When the child Markandeya saw Yamraj, loudly chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, he hugged the Shivling. Yamraj tried to drag the child away from the Shivling, only then the temple started trembling with a loud roar and Mahakal himself appeared from the Shivling.
He got angry and said to Yamraj, how did you dare to drag a devotee engaged in my meditation?
Yamraj said, ‘Lord, I am your servant. At the end of the human life, you have entrusted me with the cruel task of taking life from the living beings.’ This child’s age has come to an end.
I was doing my duty as per law. Lord Shiva’s anger calmed down on hearing this and said to Yamraj, you are right, but I am pleased with the penance of devotee Markandeya, further this child is going to compose a mantra for the welfare of the world.
That’s why I give him the boon of longevity. You cannot take its life. You go back. After this, Yamraj bowed down to the Lord and said, ‘Your advise is paramount.”
From this incident, Shivji said that from now on any devotee who chants the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, all troubles will be removed and he will not have the fear of premature death.
